ITIN Required Documents: A Complete Guide for IRS-Approved Acceptance Agents
What is ITIN?
The Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number that is issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for some resident and nonresident aliens, as well as their dependents and spouses. This number is important for persons who earn income within the U.S., but not qualified for Social Security Number (SSN). Specifically, this is relevant to foreign nationals with income or investment in the USA who have an obligation to file a US tax return.
Why you may need an ITIN
If you cannot get an SSN yet you have U.S. tax duties, then getting an ITIN becomes mandatory. Whether you are working temporarily in the US or have other business activities like earning income from investments, or even claiming treaty benefit taxes such as gambling winnings; having ITIN will enable you fulfill these tax obligations.
